Spurs trigger Alderweireld extension and Pochettino talks transfers
FOOTBALL-Nairobi, Kenya 27 December 18:48 GMT
Tottenham will trigger the extension clause in defender Toby Alderweireld’s contract, which includes a £25m release clause, Pochettino says and will look to bring in new recruits in January.
The Belgium international’s current deal runs out next year but the club has an option to extend it until 2020 with his deal set to expire in the summer and the release clause of £25m will apply up to the last two weeks of the summer transfer window.
Pochettino spoke of the upcoming transfer window with the Spurs boss looking for ins and outs in the squad:
“Yes maybe every day we talk but it depends on if players are going to leave, and to have space to sign players,” he said. “It depends on players going out and then we’re going to see if we can add some quality to help the team.
“But I think it’s not going to be easy to add players in January. For sure it’s going to be tough to add.”
“Until the market is open it’s difficult to talk because now we have a lot of games to play,” said Pochettino. “But for sure in January when the market is going to be open that’s the moment when we’re going to talk with different players – players that maybe come to talk with us because they want to leave or they want to play more.
“It’s a normal period that we need to be open and careful about our decisions.
“We’re always open but it’s going to be difficult – maybe not impossible but difficult, yes.”
