Atalanta boss Gasperini “we didn’t do our best to win the game”
Nairobi, Kenya 23 December 19:56 GMT
Atalanta Gian Piero Gasperini has called out his team for not doing everything to win in the 3-1 defeat at Genoa with Jose Palomino and Rafael Toloi getting sent off in the game and will miss Juventus clash.
Josip Ilicic missed a penalty on 36 minutes to put Atalanta in front and were punished as Rafael Toloi put into his own net but Duvan Zapata equalised from the spot but was hit by Genoa goals by Darko Lazovic’s strike and Krzysztof Piatek in between the red cards.
Gasperini told Radio Rai via Football Italia: “We return home with the feeling we didn’t do our best to win the game,” “We were unlucky at times, but we certainly did little to help ourselves.
“It’s a shame, because we threw away a good opportunity. Evidently, we still aren’t strong enough to keep fighting so high up in the standings.
“At times we had the game in control, and we were winning the individual duels. Then there were a few episodes that could have decided the game, like our missed penalty.”
Despite this result, Milan’s loss to Fiorentina means that Gasperini’s men are still within reach of fourth place, with Lazio leading by only four points.
“Everybody’s talking about the ‘European zone’ because the competition is so open, but if we keep playing so inconsistently, I doubt we’ll be able to keep up.
“We have to play Juventus, then Sassuolo on Saturday. Let’s close the first half of the season, and then we’ll evaluate where we are.”
