Frankfurt were held by Mainz in the Wednesday Bundesliga game with Robin Quaison and Luka Jovic grabbing a brace for their sides in a 2-2 draw.
Robin Quaison opened the scoring barely 10 minutes in after Jean-Philippe Mateta slipped him in on the right side of the penalty and the forward struck high into the top of the near post but Jovic tapped from close range from a Filip Kostic cutback on 31 minutes but Mainz went ahead again through the striker who sneaked in to stick his leg out and smash home but the Serbian striker connected from a header to level the game.
Head coach Adi Hütter: I think we saw a very intense derby duel today. Over 90 minutes, it was a fair draw. In the 80th minute Kevin Trapp saved us from a defeat, finally Ante Rebic had the winning goal on the foot.
“Mainz played a very good game and demanded everything, congratulations on this achievement. Luka Jovic is not so far ahead in the top scorers list. He is an absolute scorer. The 1: 1 we played outstanding, the second goal Luka scored very well with the head. As I’ve said before, he’s a player with many abilities, a really good striker”.
Sandro Schwarz (Mainz coach): The first 30 minutes were outstanding. We had a very good order, were aggressive in forward movement and in counter-pressing. Then the gates fell as well. Only we missed it, to go with a guide in the break and were not consistently at the corner before the second goal against the man.
“The second half was initially displacement fight without great opportunities. From the 60th minute, we were able to increase the pressure again and could have gotten a penalty. On the other hand, Robin Zentner was on the spot against Rebic. All in all, it was a great Rhine-Main derby, so let’s take the point”.
