London- Former Arsenal captain and midfielder Granit Xhaka has slammed the Gunners fans for bringing a hostile environment to the club with Unai Emery side falling further behind the top four with a 2-0 defeat at Leicester City.
Xhaka who was stripped of the captaincy after the draw was seen responding to boos from his own fans with a foul mouth tirade and gesturing with his ears cupped towards supporters after being hauled off in the 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace.
The Swiss international has since not featured for the Gunners in their draw away to Guimares in the Europa League and yesterday’s loss and speaking to swiss media revealed the hostile atmosphere was part of the problem.
“When my shirt number lit up on the board of the fourth official and then broke jealous jubilation of their own fans, that hit me very much and stirred up,” Xhaka told Swiss newspaper Blick via Eurosport.
“It was very painful and frustrating. For me, this reaction is still incomprehensible, especially in this vehemence and how extremely hostile I was here.
“Since I can remember, the fans are an integral part of my sport. And I have a lot of respect from the beginning for the commitment and hardships fans take to help us player”
