Arsenal defence was made up of a makeshift back line with Laurent Koscielny, midfield specialist Granit Xhaka and 34-year-old Stephan Lichtsteiner and were punished 3-2 by Southampton with Danny Ings brace and Charlie Austin winner before Henrikh Mkhitaryan two comeback goals.
Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl: “It’s amazing what the team can do in a week. It was very intensive, we had time to work on the basics and built the fundamentals for our game.
“I’m very proud of how focused and uncompromising they were, and when they had the chances, how merciless they were.
“It was a fantastic atmosphere and a special feeling here to win the match.”
Arsenal manager Unai Emery: “We could have lost at any time and it was today.
“Southampton deserved the result because they pushed and played with big ambition. This is football. Sometimes we could win that game but today we lost it.
“We need to do some analysis on how we can improve and do better.
“We haven’t conceded a lot of chances but today they scored three goals. That is a lot so we need to improve with this. We need to continue our way with confidence and taking responsibility for the 90 minutes.”
