Sergi Darder win derby for Espanyol
Sergi Darder emerged the difference as Espanyol edged out Catalan rivals Girona with the midfielder grabbing a brace in a 2-1 win.
With a point separating both sides in the LaLiga Santander classification and both Espanyol and Girona without wins in a recent couple of weeks three points were crucial to avoid getting caught up in the relegation mire.
A barren first half with little chances created except that Lei Wu’s effort early on and Cristian Stuani header that went above the crossbar limited an exciting first half action.
However, the second half saw Espanyol’s Dader open the scoring after 59 minutes with a striker from the edge of the box after Girona’s defender clearance fell to volley into the left side of the goal.
Espanyol’s lead was cut on 80 minutes with a harsh penalty via VAR with Diego Lopez getting a hand on the penalty from Christian Stuani but couldn’t keep it out.
With a minute of regular time left Dader took a speculative shot from 35 yards that somehow crept in on the left bottom corner past Girona keeper Bono should have kept out for the three points for Espanyol.
