Saint Etienne move fourth in Ligue 1
Saint Etienne defeated Nimes Olympique 2-1 in Ligue 1 to move above Marseille into the fourth position with Robert Beric grabbing the winner.
The game started badly with Saint Etienne fans protesting the moving of the game to Monday and Nimes took an early lead with Antonin Bobichon scoring from Denis Bouanga cross for Nimes in the second minute, with a header that went out of the reach of goalkeeper Stephane Ruffier.
Saint Etienne restored parity with Remy Cabella capitalizing on a slip by Jordan Ferri in the 24th minute and the victory was achieved on 79 minutes from Beric fifth French league goal of the season.
Saint Etienne boss Jean-Louis Gasset, on his feeling about this victory against Nîmes (2-1)
It was also a funny weekend. Playing on a Monday and see the match of the stands. It was a match that we started badly. He told L’Equipe.
We still delivered a very good first period with opportunities in our favor. We would have deserved to score more goals. We had a dip after half-time but there was never a dropout. There was a good mood and we were rewarded with a goal from Robert Beric.
“The two goalkeepers delivered an extraordinary match. Stéphane Ruffier made the stops that allowed us to win. We rarely see matches with so many opportunities. It’s the success of a team trying to play. I’m happy to have won”.
