Lucas Hernandez has completed a summer move to Bayern Munich from Atletico Madrid after January speculation linking him with a move to Bavaria.
Die Roten were linked with the player in the winter transfer window and were looking to activate his release clause before being persuaded to wait until the summer with Atletico in the Champions League and the final in their stadium the Wanda Metropolitano.
However, Atletico Madrid denied the rumors in a statement released by the club denying an alleged deal between Bayern Munich and our player Lucas Hernandez, stating that, in conversation with the club, Lucas Hernandez has denied any deal with Bayern Munich and also had any intention to exit our club.
The signing sees the Bundesliga champions revamp their back line with Stuttgart defender and French world cup teammate Benjamin Pavard set to join the Bavarians in the summer as they look to reduce the average age of the club.
However, the French and Atleti defender will have to undergo surgery after being out for the rest of the season with Bayern revealing of knee ligament injury.
“In our sports medical examination, we found damage to the inner ligament of the right knee, which must be repaired surgically,” Bayern club doctor Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt revealed via Bayern club website.
“In my experience, Lucas Hernandez will be available to FC Bayern for the start of the 2019-20 Bundesliga season.”
Lucas Hernandez speaking after the announcement said:
Hernandez explained, “This is a really important day in my footballing career. FC Bayern Munich is one of the best clubs in Europe and the world. I’m proud to be able to fight for all possible titles with Bayern. I’d like to thank Atletico, the management, the coaches, my teammates and the fans for 12 wonderful years. Atletico will always remain a part of me. Now I’m looking forward to taking the next step with FC Bayern.”
