Napoli depend on Milik’s away goal to secure EL quarters spot

Arkadiusz Milik goal proved vital in Napoli’s march into the Europa League quarter-finals over Red Bull Salzburg despite a 3-1 loss to the Austrian champions in a 4-3 aggregate win.

Napoli were confident after taking a 3-0 lead in the first leg from Naples with their hosts needing four goals to outright seal qualification and proved a daunting task with the quality on show for the Serie A side.

The Italian side made life harder for the hosts with Milik sideway kick after Dries Mertens cross came off a combination of Andre Ramalho and the goalkeeper for the Polish striker to finish with aplomb just after 14 minutes.

The home side got a foothold in the game with Szoboszlai intercepted Alan pass in the midfield and slipped in Munas Dabbur to calmly wrong-foot the defender and slip past the keeper on 25 minutes.

Fredrik Gulbrandsen gave Marco Rose side the lead on the night on 65 minutes after turning in Ulmer’s cross from a few yards and sealed the win on Christoph Leitgeb stoppage-time goal ended up being on consolation losing 4-3 overall.

Ancelotti speaking after the 4-3 aggregate win said:

“The plan was not to get drop deep in defense from the start, which we did well,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“Now we look forward to the quarter-final, which will no doubt be difficult. We had the right approach initially, but then had difficulty dealing with the comeback. I guess the 3-0 first leg lead made us feel comfortable enough going into the final minutes.
