opinion:was mauricio pochettino right to complain about two game touchline ban

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino was handed a two-game ban and fined £10,000 after his charge after the Burnley game for clashing with celebrity referee Mike Dean.

Speaking after the announcement of the two-game ban Pochettino expressed his displeasure at the sanctions.

“I am a little bit in shock because I think it is completely unfair. But what can I do now? Nothing – only to accept it.

“I need to see the reason they announced I’m going to be banned. I still don’t know the reason because the letter did not arrive.”

WAS Pochettino DECISION UNFAIR

Comparing the Argentine imposed sanctions with probably the most fined manager in premier league history Jose Mourinho, Mourinho fines seemed way overboard with mostly one game touchline bans.

On October 3, 2015, Mourinho Criticized referee Bobby Madley and was charged as having implied bias, fined £50,000 and given a suspended one-match stadium ban.  following a 3-1 loss to Southampton for saying referees were “afraid” to give Chelsea penalties and told officials to “be honest with us”.

In 2015 the then Chelsea manager was sent to the stands at West Ham for a half-time “discussion” with referee Jonathan Moss and Handed one-match stadium suspension with immediate effect and fined £40,000.

The Portuguese again in 2016 was sent to the stands for the second half against Burnley by referee Mark Clattenburg after allegedly using “abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official” in the tunnel at half-time and was given a one-match touchline ban and a fine of £8,000.

Opinion

Based on the nature of the charge the fine would cause him sleepless nights but the touchline ban seemed more draconian as Pochettino was quick to offer his apologies after clashing with the referee and his record in the disciplinary front is one of the best whereas the FA favourite, Mourinho got one match bans despite repeated sanctions.

The Spurs manager under pressure for the top four race knows his side are up against it after three games in the Premier League without a win after drawing in the Arsenal game and losing to Chelsea and Burnley previously and will have to wait and see if the ban affects their chances for champions league football.
