Cagliari shocked Inter Milan 2-1 with first-half goals and could have made it worse after missing a penalty in the second half to dent the Nerazzurri Champions league aspirations.
The home side took the lead on 31 minutes as captain Luca Ceppitelli rose highest to guide the ball from the centre of the box and connects with the free kick from Luca Cigarini.
Luciano Spalletti side hit back with Lautaro Martinez heading past the keeper’s legs on the near post steering in Radja Nainggolan’s cross seven minutes later with Rolando Maran’s side looking the better side.
However, Leonardo Pavoletti gave Cagliari the lead again showing a poacher’s touch and good composure inside the box to fire a first-time shot into the bottom right corner from Darijo Srna’s cross.
Nicolo Barella should have added the third but blasted his spot-kick high over the bar after Milan Skriniar conceded a penalty in stoppage time.
Speaking after the game Spalletti on the 2-1 loss to Cagliari:
“It was an ugly display from Inter in the first half, we were slow in our decision-making and slow when moving the ball,” said Luciano Spalletti as he looked back honestly at the away defeat against Cagliari. “We read situations badly and we didn’t have enough quality in our play. Cagliari then scored two big goals, they weren’t simple. We had the potential to do the same in attack but we weren’t able to match them.”
“There was a response in the second half, we did very well in spells but you need to score goals. We deserved more but we weren’t clinical when we had chances.”
