Sevilla advanced to the next round of Europa League with a brace from Wissam Ben Yedder and Ever Banega penalty against Kuban Krasnodar with fans chanting against the sale by shareholders.
Los Rojiblancos needed a win with their opponents already securing their place into the round of 32 and Ben Yedder pouncing on some bad defending from Kabore who was put under pressure and while clearing sent the ball back to his goal for the Frenchman to pounce.
Ben Yedder got his brace in 15 minutes after controlling a long punt forward by Sergi Gomez to beat the defender and plant the ball into the back of the net.
Yedder was denied his hat-trick on 49 minutes with the keeper denying his effort but the rebound fell to Andre Silva whose header was handled on the goal line by Cristian Ramirez who was given his marching orders and Ever Banega slotted home the penalty.
Pablo Machín speaking before the match reflected on the importance of the game
‘I very much agree with what Sergi has said. We’re professionals and we need to focus on what happens out on the pitch. Beyond that, I think that there’s a big difference between institutional matters and sporting matters, which is the bit that concerns us.
“We all want to win and for that, we need a strong connection with the fans, who are going to show that they are with the team. I don’t have the right to ask anything from where I stand because we’re the ones that have to give first, but the people are smart enough to realise that what we need is for them to cheer us on through 90 minutes until the end.
“What needs to happen with the club will be decided somewhere else. Sevillismo is both the team and the fans and we’re nothing without each other. We have to show that extra bit of courage.’
