Mohamed Salah goal was enough for Liverpool to seal their qualifications in the champions league with Alisson performing a stunning last-gasp save, as the Reds knocked Napoli out of the Champions League.
Napoli were looking to progress to the Round of 16 if they avoided defeat at Anfield, but even a 2-1 or 3-2 loss could be enough.
Liverpool luck seemed to be holding with Virgil van Dijk was fortunate to only get a yellow card after his studs-up tackle caught Mertens on the ankle taking the ball and the man which was a clear red card via replays.
Jurgen Klopp men thought they had gotten the opener on 22 minutes but Sadio Mane who had the ball in the back of the net only after he had wandered into an offside position. Kalidou Koulibaly also made a decisive tackle on Salah to stop him going clear.
Liverpool did take the lead on 34 minutes with Salah shot into the back of the net past the goalkeeper’s legs for the crucial goal to take advantage in the tie.
The second half saw the Italian side waste a glorious chance as Jose Callejon back post shot going straight over the bar with Andrew Robertson beaten by the cross from Lorenzo Insigne.
Carlo Ancelotti side almost nicked the game as Arkadiusz Milik, latched to a cross that had been headed on by Liverpool’s defenders to stretch his foot and control and shot but a charging Alisson Becker closed the shot down from point-blank range for the points.
