10 man Monaco dumped out on penalties in Coupe de Ligue
AS MONACO survived with 10 men following William Vanquere’s red card but lose out on penalties to Ligue 1 bottom side Guingamp despite taking a two-goal lead that was pegged back eventually in a 2-2 draw.
Speaking after the loss on penalties Leonardo Jardim praised the team’s fighting spirit despite the loss in his first game in charge since his re-appointment and sacking of Thierry Henry.
“The first period was better than the second. But we played almost 87 minutes to ten. With the tiredness in the second period, we did not have the opportunity to keep the same offensive will. Many offensive players were tired. Gelson Martins did not play much at Atlético. Golovin had cramps.
“The attitude, the commitment of the players was very good. I loved. These are things I want to see for this team. I want it to be organized, that the players try to win the duels.
“This is the attitude I expect from them. We will work that for the Championship. We will do everything to fulfil our goal, which is maintenance.
On Monaco having been given taken three red cards in four games
“The team played with commitment, won duels. William Winner does not control his tackle, he makes a mistake a bit silly. With a good physical condition, there is no need to tack like that.
“No, it’s a habit to bring in a goalkeeper for the penalties. We missed three penalties, Guingamp two, while we did not change goalkeeper. They are qualified, but it’s mostly a question of luck.
On possible transfers
“Maybe, both for arrivals and departures. I asked that the workforce be reduced. I can not play ten players and have 20 others who are not happy not to play. We must also strengthen the team and provide solutions”.
