Schalke snatch last minute winner over Lokomotiv Moscow
Alessandro Schopf scored the winner in stoppage time to ensure the Bundesliga side got some measure of revenge for the Rurh Derby loss to Borussia Dortmund.
Lokomotiv Moscow needed three points to assure of finishing third in Group D for a place in the Europa league, but it finished last with three points, one behind Galatasaray, which secured third despite losing 3-2 at home to group winner FC Porto.
The game was also for former Schalke captain Benedikt Hoewedes and winger Jefferson Farfan, who now play for Moscow, to be paid tribute on their return to Gelsenkirchen ahead of the game having played for the Royal Blues.
Schoepf’s goal came after Suat Serdar shot on goal was parried by Moscow’s keeper Guilherme after a flick on and beating the offside in the right near post and for his team mate to pounce on the rebound to see Schalke finish on 11 points, five behind Porto.
Former Schalke captain Benedikt Hoewedes and winger Jefferson Farfan, who now play for Moscow, were honored on their return to Gelsenkirchen ahead of the game.
