kpl result: Mathare edged out Tusker to go top

Mathare United returned to the top of the KPL with a 2-1 win over Tusker in a Kenyan Premier League clash played at the Ruaraka Grounds.

Mathare opened the scoring through Johnstone Omurwa while the effervescent James Kinyanjui doubled the lead as Peter Nzuki pulled one goal back for Tusker late on but couldn’t equalise.

Mathare whose threat from set pieces has delivered several wins in the current campaign took the lead as Kevin Kimani fell to Johnstone Omurwa who controlled the ball with ease to fire it into the net and hand the away side the lead on 24 minutes.

The brewers almost equalised with striker Timothy Otieno effort hitting the crossbar with the former Gor Mahia striker left with his head in his hands with Owiny’s hands after David Juma headed the second pickings.

Kimanzi’s boys went two goals up, doubling their lead in the 68th minute when Cliff Nyakea slid in Kinyanjui to get his first Mathare United goal and increase the lead in the game

Tusker pulled one back in the 78th minute through Meja’s delivery from a freekick with a glancing header to bring back the brewers back in the contest.
