World footballer of the year Luka Modric has laid the claim that most of the squad aren’t playing to their potential and are suffering mentally and physically after their 2-0 defeat to Real sociedad.
“There are many players who aren’t performing at their best level and I’m the first on that list,” he was quoted by Marca.com
“I know that I have to improve and I’m here to take responsibility.”
“We have to improve mentally and physically, taking it match by match and not thinking about Barcelona or the other teams who are ahead of us,” he stated.
“We have to raise our level of play and be better mentally because we have enough quality and class in the team that can help us improve and find a way out of this situation.”
“The coach is doing a good job and he has prepared us for the games very well,” Modric continued.
“But he cannot score goals for us.
“He can’t avoid what is happening at the start of games because he’s doing his job.
“We are the ones on the field.”
Finally, the Croatian international refused to lay blame at VAR decision that denied Vinicius a penalty
“There are reasons that explain why things aren’t going well and the referee didn’t have the best day, but our problem is not him or VAR, although they haven’t helped us,” he concluded.
“Our issues are elsewhere.
“Many of us are not at our best level and that is a problem.”
